Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship

To be eligible to sponsor your parents or grandparents, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirement based on your family size
  • Agree to financially support your sponsored family members for 20 years (or 10 years in
    Quebec)

Who Can Be Sponsored?

Eligible sponsors can bring:

  • Their biological or adoptive parents
  • Their grandparents
  • In some cases, step-parents if they are in a legal marriage/common-law relationship with
    the parent

Application Process

  1. Expression of Interest: The sponsor must first submit an interest-to-sponsor form when
the program opens. This is typically done through an annual lottery system.
  2. Invitation to Apply: If selected, the sponsor receives an invitation to submit a full
    application within a specified deadline.
  3. Application Submission & Processing: After submitting required documents, medical
exams, and police certificates, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
    processes the application.
